 Augustus Does Hit Bit

नेपालीमा सारांश

यो एक हास्यास्पद नाटक हो। यसमा जम्मा तीनवटा मात्र पात्र छन् :

(१) अगस्टस (मेयर)

(२) विमीस कारिन्दा)

(३) नाम नखुलेको लेडी

अगस्टस विसिष्ट वर्ग र लिटल पिफीलिटङटन भन्ने ठाउँको मेयर हो। उसले कर्नेलको लुगा लगाएको छ। ४५ वर्षको भए पनि अती सुन्दर देखिन्छ। खुट्टा फिजाएर "द बिहानी पोस्ट" पढिरहेको बेला एउटा ५७ वर्षे कारिन्दा ढुनमुनिदै छिर्छ। मेयर आफ्नो बुद्धिमा एकदमै घमण्ड गर्ने खालको हुन्छ । मेयर कारिन्दालाई हरेक पटक नराम्रो व्यवहार गर्दछ। हरेक चोटी सबैले आफ्नो देश (बेलायत) लाई योगदान दिनुपर्छ भनिरहन्छ।

अगस्टसले कारिन्दालाई योद्धाहरूको भर्ती गर्न भाषण दिएको कुरा सुनाउँछ। भाषण आकर्षक भएको भनी फुर्ति लाउँछ। मेयर ग्यास बचाउन स्टोभको प्रयोग गर्न आदेश दिन्छ तर कारिन्दा गोलाबारुद मन्त्रीले उसलाई कोइला बचाई ग्याँस प्रयोग गर्न आदेश दिएको कुरा सुनाउँछ। कारिन्दा भोकै मर्नलागे भनी तलब बढाउन आग्रह गर्छ तर मेयर महान योद्धा युद्धमा भएको बेला तलब बढाउन नसकिने कुरा गर्छ। मेयर युद्धलाई महत्त्वपूर्ण ठान्छ, तर कारिन्दाले भने देश कुकुर जस्तै भएको कुरा गर्छ। मेयर युद्ध जित्ने कुरा गर्छ। मेयर आफुसँग महान शक्तिशाली जर्नेलहरू भएकोले गर्दा युद्धमा आफ्‌नो देशलाई बढी क्षति नहुने कुरा गर्छ।

नाटक पढ्दै जाँदा एउटा अतिनै धुर्त चाप्लुसीवाज महिला मेयरलाई भेट्न आउँछे। मेयरका तीन जना भिनाजुहरू जर्मनी भएकाले गर्दा जर्मनीबाट खतरा नहुने कुरामा विश्वास गर्छ।

पहिलो विश्वयुद्ध चलिरहेको बेला शत्रुबाट बच्न विभिन्न ठाउँमा विस्फोटक बन्दुक, मोरता बारुद जडान गर्ने तयारीमा मेयर रहेको हुन्छ। हास्यास्पद (Force) नाटक भएको कारण जोकको कुरा पनि आउँछ यो पाठमा

अगस्टससँग गोला बारुद, बन्दुक गोप्यरुपमा जडान गर्ने लिस्ट हुन्छ। तर यति मुर्ख छ की। त्यो सबै लिस्ट लेडीलाई दिई शहरलाई नै खतरामा पार्छ। यो सबै कुरा उसको भाइले उसलाई मुर्ख बनाउने बाजी थापेको कुरा पत्ता पाउँदैन। जब लोडी सत्य कुरा बताउँछे, मेयर रिसाउँदै आफ्ना देशका योद्धाहरू देशका लागि लडिरहेको बेला धोका दिएको आरोप लाउँछ। पछि लेडीले उसको साहसी उ भएको, अनि बन्दुक जडानको खुलासाले केही पर्ने कुरा गर्द उसके भाई आफुलाई खाएर मुख बनाउन पठाएको कुरा ग 

Summary in English

In the small town of Little Pifflington, Lord Augustus Highcastle tells his secretary, Horatio Beamish (Clerk) that the war is very serious matter. Augustus has also delivered recruiting speech which he thinks best speech. The clerk thinks that such recruiting speech is just to kill warrior in the battle. It was not a great speech because it was just the army enrollment in war and inviting war.

The mayor, Augustus is so arrogant. He treats the clerk very badly. There was going war between Britain and Germany, and many British soldiers were at the front of war. Lord Augustus Highcastle tells his secretary Horatio Beamish that the war is a very serious matter. especially as he has three German brothers-in-law.

The clerk requests for a high pay but Augustus does not hear his such demand thinking that it is not suitable to fulfil his demand in the time of war because many warrior are dying in trench (s). On the other hand, clerk thinks that his demand is quite right because he doesnot want to die of hunger.

Later, in order to curtail the expenses, Augustus orders clerk to take away gas stove and replace by an ordinary grate to save gas. Clerk recalling minister of munitions tells him that minister has ordered him to use gas instead of coal in order to save material.

In the mean time, a glamorous woman visits him. After flattering him by saying how important he is, she wins the heart of the mayor. She also cunningly tells him that she suspects her sister-in-law of being the spy. Later, Augustus learns that a female spy is after an important document in his possession. She explains that Augustus' brother, Blueloo, has made a bet that Augustus can be easily tricked, and intends to use this woman to prove it. If she can get the document, a list of British gun emplacements, and gave it to "Blueloo", Augustus's incompetence will be exposed.

Clerk enters holding the document, which Augustus had left on a coffee table in the hotel. The lady manages to switch the document for a fake one and leaves. Having secured the document before witnesses, she returns to telephone the War Office. She telephones Blueloo saying that she has easily outwitted, Lord Augustus. Augustus then realizes that she was the spy and the document he has, is a fake.

Augustus is war mongrel. He is showy and proud of himself. He is so foolish and silly so that he doesnot know the fact that his brother has sent a female spy to fool him. He is flattered by her saying that he is so handsome and important person of the town and he lets the lady takes his important document just by her flirting. He also thinks that war is essential to build the nation strong. In the name of making nation strong, he has given the recruitment speech declaring to provide pension to dead warrior's wives. He seems joker, clown, and having no mind because female spy has cheated him but as he knows the reality, he doesnot do anything to her.

Understanding

1. At the beginning the clerk seems to be incompetent. How? Is he really incompetent? (सुरुमा क्लर्क अयोग्य देखिन्छ। कसरी ? के उनिसाँच्चै अयोग्य हुनु ?)
